Do You Prescribe Weight Loss Medications?

Yes. Obesity is complex. It is not simply about self-will and "pushing yourself away from the table." However, optimal health also isn't as simple as prescribing a medication. Prescribing weight loss medications can offer profound life changes for many, but it is important to me to also integrate sustainable lifestyle changes, and unique to my practice, I have created a comprehensive, individualized physical health virtual program that addresses various underlying issues that lead to obesity. Clients are also encouraged to join my daily yoga classes with no additional fee.

GLP-1s specifically are prescribed as part of my primary care practice. There is no membership. Just like any other medication, whether for hypertension or anxiety, this is part of the treatment plan. You pay for my service. This prescription is sent to the pharmacy and you can use your healthcare insurance for coverage, or if it isn't covered, we have a…

Education is Your Niche? What does that Mean?

Not only do I enjoy education myself, a life-long learner and true nerd at heart, I really enjoy curating this knowledge for my clients. Maybe that's the homeschool Momma in me, maybe that's just part of who I am, an educator, or maybe I've witnessed too many women bullied in their childbearing experience, parents belittled and overpowered when seeking care for their precious child, or too many really intelligent people simply ignored, even dehumanized, in my career to motivate me to want to arm them, or empower them with education. The art and science of healthcare, wellness, nutrition, nature, trauma, epigenetics, chronic disease, and holistic growth and development, all of it, just fascinates me.

You know how you don't always recognize your own little mannerisms or sayings until you see them in your children? Mine are always saying, "Did you know!?" And then they share something super fascinating they learned…

Where is Your Practice Location?

Eden Family Practice is located in Lexington, Kentucky on the east side, in Hamburg, at 1795 Alysheba Way, Suite 1204. The office is just off of Man O' War, near Costco. It is on the second floor, so for those who are limited in their ability to climb stairs, I am happy to offer a home visit. As well, I can do this for families with multiple children, as those consults are typically much more easily managed when the children have their own space to play. It allows parents to relax a bit too, less worried about having to entertain their little ones while we are discussing their health and wellness.

I am licensed to practice as a family nurse practitioner and certified nurse-midwife in both Indiana and Kentucky. Because I practiced in Indiana for more than a decade before moving to Lexington, about once or twice each month, I…

My Core Philosophical Guidelines for Healing

My background is quite diverse from studying as a midwife, an herbalist, a family nurse-practitioner, and a yogi. I value Earth Medicine, conventional science, and the innate healing power of our own bodies. I respect plants, science, my clients, and the planet. When I work with clients, I do have a sense of philophies that guide me and this is where I find connection.

Having the spirit of a healer is both an art and a science. It is about compassion and meeting each person where they are at on their healing journey. It's about empowering them through education to be their own best healer. These philosophies are my compass of sorts, a way of engaging with my clients.

Each Individual is an Evolving with Their Own Inherent Wisdom

From our very core, at the cellular level, each of us have an inherent healing power. My goal is to support…

Nurse Practitioner or Physician: What's the Difference?

For most of you, the difference isn't significant enough for you to even notice, particularly if needing primary care services. There isn't a ton that a primary care physician would do differently, with regards to clinical care, or could do differently than a family nurse practitioner. Each practitioner, whether nurse practitioner or physician can specialize, find their niche, and really make a name for themselves in any particular area of healthcare, gathering referrals throughout the community.

Primary care practitioners in general is the clinician who manages your overall health. We consider all the necessary screenings you may be an appropriate candidate, particularly as you age, but primary care practitioners also evaluate mental and emotional health, lifestyle behaviors, and we lean into wellness. We manage acute care issues, but the mainstay of our practice is management of chronic healthcare conditions. Primary care clinicians typically serve individuals from their first day of…

What does it mean to be Client-Centered as opposed to having a more Medical Model in your practice?

Consider that much of modern medicine has been about respecting the physician as the authority. This is not our philosophy. Not that we don't respect physicians, but rather, we see ourselves as equals for our clients to establish a mutual respecting relationship. This means creating a mutual goal for your wellness.

We do not see ourselves as the fixer or the rescuer but ultimately a resource of information specific to the context of the encounter. The midwifery model of care was a great foundation for me as a clinician in that we seek for the woman to maintain her power and authority over herself. We want the responsibility of this work we do together to really be in the hands of the client, and while we share in that, we certainly are not the ultimate power and authority.

Our goal is to assist our clients in moving towards self-care and…

What Can You Do That My Primary Care Doctor Can't?

I have the freedom of time. Not partaking in the sickcare model or working within the restraints of the third party payers, means I can focus on what the client needs and whatever is best for them as unique individuals. I don't have to prescribe to the insurance model which is what conventional medicine must do and why our healthcare system is currently failing so miserably.

I am not bound by rules and regulations that demand high numbers over quality of care. Rather than simply identify as quickly as possible the most pertinent complaint, labeling it and prescribing for it, I can listen and work to identify the underlying issue, but this requires really listening, getting really curious, and asking a lot of questions before drawing any conclusions. Certainly if you have any of the number of chronic diseases you were told at some point to alter your diet and…

Five Common Complaints

The five most common complaints of healthcare consumers are long wait times, issues with staff members, amount of time spent with their practitioner, insurance and billing issues, and lack of communication and dismissiveness. Let me share how we have addressed these and why we are different.

Average Visit is 60 Minutes

We don't bill according to time, but our average visit is 60 minutes in duration and for a new client, this only includes listening to you, taking your history, and gathering information. Your physical and further discussion occurs in a separate visit. All of this time is spent with the practitioner, not in the waiting room (in fact we don't even have a waiting room) or even with a clinical assistant.

When I was in clinical residency, I was pushed to get new clients completed in TEN minutes. The insanity of this makes clear why our healthcare system is…
